Winthrop Harbor VFD responds to 85 fires in 2018

Winthrop Harbor Volunteer Fire Department responded to 166 calls in 2018 - 36.1 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Winthrop Harbor included 85 fires - 68 structure fires, five vehicle fires and 12 other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $398,250 in fire loss - or about $4,685 per fire.

The department also received 80 false calls, including six malicious calls and 74 other false calls.

One fire service member was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Winthrop Harbor Volunteer Fire Department had an annual budget of $62,673 in 2018.
