A Mundelein man was arrested and charged with selling fentanyl and other drugs following an investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Group. The unit is a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area funded task force.
"We have witnessed the terrible effects that fentanyl has in our community. As your Sheriff, I will continue to make it a priority to arrest those who traffic deadly drugs into our community. I am proud that we successfully removed another drug dealer off our streets by working together with our federal and local partners," Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, according to a press release.
According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office press release, the Special Investigations Group received information that Alejandro I. Dominguez, 42, of the 200 block of Archer Avenue, Mundelein, was allegedly selling cocaine and pills laced with fentanyl. Detectives from the group started an undercover investigation that took several months. Undercover detectives recovered more than 1,300 pills laced with fentanyl and more than 30 grams of cocaine.
Dominguez was taken into custody on July 18 without incident following the investigation, according to a Lake County Sheriff's Office press release. The Lake County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the facts of the case and approved charges including four counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (Class X felonies), according to a Lake County Sheriff's Office press release. Other charges included five counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (Class 1 felonies), unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (Class 2 felonies), and 10 counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (Class 4 felonies). A judge ordered Dominguez held for a detention hearing on July 23.
Other agencies that partnered in the investigation included the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), Highland Park Police Department, Park City Police Department, Round Lake Beach Police Department, Round Lake Park Police Department, Round Lake Police Department, Wauconda Police Department, Waukegan Police Department, Winthrop Harbor Police Department, and Zion Police Department, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office press release. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
