Illinois communities celebrate holidays with festive events statewide

Towns and cities across Illinois are embracing the holiday spirit with a variety of festive events. Each community brings its unique traditions to life, offering residents and visitors alike a chance to enjoy the season.

In Woodstock, the Lighting of the Square event marks the beginning of Christmas celebrations with thousands of lights illuminating downtown. This annual event features various activities, including an appearance by Santa Claus.

East Peoria's Festival of Lights has been a highlight for nearly 40 years. The Parade of Lights showcases creatively lit floats such as a massive steam engine and the "E.P. Noel" Riverboat. The Winter Wonderland drive-through light display offers over 40 installations for families to enjoy.

Galena transforms into a picturesque holiday scene with its historic downtown adorned in festive lights and garlands. Visitors can partake in seasonal activities like tree lighting ceremonies and fireworks, as well as holiday home tours featuring decorated historic homes.

Urbana's Candlestick Lane is a tradition dating back more than 60 years. Residents on Grant Place create intricate light displays that attract visitors from across Illinois, making it a must-see destination during the holidays.

Effingham hosts Wonderland in Lights at Community Park, featuring themed installations such as a nativity scene and reindeer. Visitors can listen to holiday music on their radios while driving through this glowing spectacle.

St. Charles celebrates with its Holiday Homecoming, starting with a tree-lighting ceremony followed by an Electric Christmas Parade. The two-day event includes carolers, sleigh rides, and local vendors offering holiday treats.

Alton's Christmas Wonderland at Rock Spring Park boasts over four million lights. Visitors can walk or drive through light tunnels and candy cane displays, with proceeds benefiting local charities.

Aurora’s Phillips Park presents Holiday Magic, a free light display that attracts families with beautifully lit trees and whimsical scenes. Special events throughout December include live music and crafts for children.

Rockford begins its festivities with Stroll on State after Thanksgiving, featuring a parade, ice rink, Santa’s Workshop, food vendors, pop-up shops, and fireworks to conclude the night.

Mount Carroll's Christmas Walk turns the town into a winter wonderland with wagon rides, caroling, storefront decorations by local businesses offering special deals, creating an ideal setting for shopping and spreading cheer.
