Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg has announced the addition of K9 Lux to the sheriff's office as its newest police canine. Lux is a direct descendant of the late K9 Dax.

"I would like to express my profound sense of gratitude and happiness that the Lake County Sheriff’s Office has officially named K9 Dax’s son, K9 Lux, as my new partner," said Deputy John Forlenza, according to a sheriff's office news release. "Dax was remarkable and always did his duty with great courage and dedication throughout his career. I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to continue as a member of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office K9 Team, and to serve the citizens of Lake County with K9 Lux."

According to the news release, K9 Dax was injured in March 2024 while apprehending a fleeing felon. The severity of his injuries led to his early retirement, and he died on April 12, 2024. Before Dax died, he fathered a litter of puppies. Forlenza, Dax's longtime partner, recognized that K9 Lux stood out with the potential to follow in his father's footsteps. Lux was selected as the top candidate for future law enforcement training.

The news release states that Forlenza and another deputy were chosen to be handlers for one of the sheriff's next two canines. Forlenza donated K9 Lux to Tops K9, the training facility responsible for preparing the sheriff's canine unit. Lux and Forlenza have been officially partnered as the newest Lake County Sheriff's Office Canine Team and will begin training this spring.

Idleburg noted that Lux carries on an incredible legacy as a direct offspring of K9 Dax. He expressed confidence that Lux will serve and protect Lake County residents with dedication and bravery.
