On June 20, 2025, at approximately 4:55 a.m., Highland Park Police Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Half Day Road to check on the wellbeing of an individual. The response followed a call from a concerned driver who reported seeing someone lying in the roadway, nearly struck by a vehicle. The caller noted that the individual then stood up and stumbled into a residence in the 900 block of Half Day Road.

Three Highland Park Police Officers arrived at the scene but did not locate anyone outside. They proceeded to knock on the door of the address provided by the caller. A man, identified as a 59-year-old resident of the home, abruptly exited carrying a knife.

The officers immediately retreated and issued multiple instructions for him to drop the knife. However, he advanced toward them with it raised, continuing to charge and threaten the officers. In response, they discharged their firearms, striking him.

Officers promptly requested paramedics and rendered life-saving aid. Despite their efforts and those of paramedics, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office has responded and is scheduling an autopsy.

In accordance with state law and department protocol, an independent investigation by the Lake County Major Crime Task Force is underway. This investigation remains ongoing.
