Jay Swidler, Chairman of Vernon Township Republicans, has expressed concerns over Governor JB Pritzker's bid for a third term. According to Swidler, this would lead to a continuation of policies he describes as harmful, characterized by high taxes, rising crime rates, and strained resources due to the state's sanctuary status. Swidler shared these views with the Lake County Gazette.
"Pritzker's run for a third term signals more of the same failed leadership that's driving Illinois into crisis," said Swidler. "Families face soaring taxes, crime runs rampant, and his open-border approach has led to a flood of illegal migrants. Local communities are overwhelmed while the governor stays silent. Illinois can't afford another four years of decline."
The Hill reported that Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced his intention to seek reelection in 2026 on June 26. This move comes amid speculation about a potential presidential run in 2028. In a video message, Pritzker pledged to safeguard progress in Illinois and counteract efforts by former President Trump. He was first elected governor in 2018 and secured reelection in 2022. The Hill also noted that while Pritzker currently faces no significant Republican challengers, he will require a new running mate since Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton is pursuing a U.S. Senate seat.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Governor Pritzker signed Illinois' largest-ever budget of $55.1 billion in June 2025. He described it as evidence of the Democrats' fiscal responsibility despite making challenging decisions amid federal funding uncertainties. The budget includes $400 million in cuts and generates $700 million through new taxes. However, Republicans have criticized the budget for its "unprecedented taxpayer-funded spending growth" without offering tax relief. Critics such as the Civic Federation argue that the plan lacks necessary structural reforms and was hastily put together amid national economic and political uncertainty.
Swidler, who resides in Buffalo Grove, was elected Chairman of Vernon Township Republicans in 2024. The organization's website states that he is committed to increasing Republican voter turnout, expanding party membership, and communicating party positions on issues important to Vernon Township voters.
