The Batavia Police Department is collaborating with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) for the "Illinois Speed Awareness Day" on July 23, 2025. This initiative is supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and over 300 state, county, and local law enforcement agencies. The campaign aims to reduce speeding through increased patrols and enforcement of traffic laws.

According to data from the Illinois Department of Transportation, speeding contributes to 44.9% of all motor vehicle fatalities, 36.3% of injury crashes, and 31.1% of roadway crashes. "Speeding is a choice that puts everyone at risk," the release states, emphasizing its impact on a driver's ability to safely maneuver and stop their vehicle.

The campaign's approach combines community outreach about obeying speed limits with a zero-tolerance enforcement effort. Its goal is to raise awareness and save lives by discouraging unnecessary speeding. The effort forms part of ILACP's "Speeding Catches Up with You" campaign and supports IDOT’s "It’s Not a Game" media initiative.
