Cicada killer wasp sightings have been reported in Vernon Hills, with the highest activity in parks' sand volleyball courts and baseball infields.

According to the Vernon Hills Park District, maintenance staff are addressing the situation by increasing the grooming of sand volleyball areas and baseball fields. This approach is intended to make the sites less appealing to the wasps, encouraging them to relocate naturally.

The wasps, recognizable by their large size and distinctive markings, are not known to be aggressive toward humans unless provoked or threatened.

Park visitors are advised to wear shoes as a precautionary measure to protect the feet, and to never handle the wasps, as they will sting in self-defense.

Officials noted that they will not use chemical pesticides or insecticides to remove the wasps. The decision is based on concerns about the potential risks those substances could pose to people, pets, and other wildlife that share the parks.

Park visitors are urged not to attempt to catch, disturb, or kill the wasps. Residents are reminded to use caution around all wild animals and insects, keeping a safe distance whenever possible.

For additional information or to report wasp activity, residents may contact the Vernon Hills Parks Department at (847) 996-6831.
