Lake Forest College President Michael J. Sosulski authored a guest commentary published by the Chicago Tribune on September 10, addressing the importance of the humanities in higher education.
In his essay, Sosulski discusses the University of Chicago’s recent move to pause graduate admissions in most humanities programs. He states, “Now is not the time for universities to retreat from the humanities,” and argues that such decisions are unwise, particularly at a time when artificial intelligence and political polarization increase the need for wisdom, creativity, and civic virtues promoted by humanities studies.
Sosulski also emphasizes Lake Forest College’s dedication to these disciplines by referencing the recently established Krebs Center for the Humanities. He presents this center as an example of how liberal arts institutions can support and advance humanistic inquiry.
