Motorists in Illinois are reminded to yield to pedestrians at marked crosswalks, as required by state law. Drivers must pay attention and follow crosswalk signals at all times.

Pedestrians are advised to always use marked crosswalks, obey pedestrian signals, look left-right-left before crossing, make eye contact with drivers when vehicles approach, check for stopped vehicles before walking past them, and watch for bicyclists.

Drivers should yield to pedestrians both in crosswalks and intersections, be ready to stop if needed, stay alert for bicyclists and skateboarders, come to a full stop at crossings, wait until pedestrians have crossed at least one lane beyond their own before moving forward, and never pass another vehicle that is stopped or slowing down at a crosswalk.

Additional information about pedestrian safety measures—including the High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) near Highland Park High School—can be found on the city’s police department website: cityhpil.com/police.
