Ben Zeller, who holds the Irvin L. and Fern D. Young Presidential Professorship of Religion, delivered the keynote address at the Faith and Food Workshop hosted by Princeton Theological Seminary last month. The workshop focused on how faith, culture, and food traditions influence human well-being.

The event was organized by an international group of scholars and led by Afe Adogame, Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Religion and Society at Princeton Theological Seminary. Nearly fifty experts attended, covering subjects such as sustainable agriculture, health and nutrition, migration, postcolonial African food production, politics, and theology.

“It was a pleasure to open the workshop and suggest themes that bring together participants,” said Zeller. He noted that attendees included “historians, theologians, ethnographers, cookbook authors, and plant scientists.”

Zeller’s keynote presentation titled “Thinking about Method in the Study of Religion and Food” encouraged participants to use Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to focus on relationships within their research.

Zeller is recognized as an American historian of religion. He previously chaired the American Academy of Religion’s Religion and Food program unit. He is also co-editor of "Religion, Food, and Eating in North America" as well as the forthcoming "Bloomsbury Handbook of Religion and Food."
