Lake Forest considers golf course and fitness center fees

The Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Board considered its fee schedule for the Deerpath Golf Course, Lake Forest Fitness Center and Forest Park for the coming fiscal year.

Several community members came to the meeting to speak with the board about the golf course. Mary Ellen Wright and Suzanne Riccardi both expressed their concerns about the poor maintenance of the course and asked the board to allocate an adequate amount of funds to improve the course's appearance.

In discussing golf course rates for the year ahead, the board deferred to recommendations from Kemper Sports Management, the third party company that manages the course. Kemper General Manager Rick Walwrath said cart fees and range fees will stay the same, while locker fees and pull cart fees will increase.

Walwrath also expressed an interest in eliminating green fees in favor of a rack rate green fee. Rack rates tend to vacillate depending on availability and customer demand, making busier days cheaper and slower days more expensive.

Facilities Program Manager Jason Busdeker presented the proposed fees for the fitness center. Busdeker's program suggested raising resident and non-resident member fees by 4 percent and lowering the non-resident fee from 25 percent to 20 percent. Busdeker also recommended replacing the fitness center's six- and- three-month membership options with a month-to-month package.

Recreation Superintendent Joe Mobile also recommended a 4 percent increase for lakefront fees, except for non-resident daily boat launch fees, which would be a flat $5 fee.

The board agreed to vote on all proposed fee schedules at its Oct. 20 meeting.
