GRANT COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 124: Material Pick-Up & Freshman Orientation

Orientation slate

Grant Community High School District 124 issued the following announcement on Aug. 4.

As stated in Principal Schmidt’s Back to School letter, material pick-up for Sophomore-Senior students will be held from August 10-12 and Freshman Orientation will be held on August 13 and 14. Below is further information regarding each activity, including the schedule which has assigned times for each student.

To ensure the safety and security of all students and staff present, we ask that students park in the South Student Parking Lot and enter through the Auditorium Entrance (Door #9) and exit through the Gym Lobby (Door #10). A staff member will be present to facilitate your health screening before you fully enter the building. Before entering the building, please make sure you are wearing a face mask properly. You will be expected to wear your mask properly for the entirety of your building visit.

Only students are allowed in the building, and parents/guardians are encouraged to wait in the parking lot. Please bring a school bag with you to carry your materials.

Grades 10, 11, 12 Material Pick-Up

With the strict guidelines from the IDPH and ISBE detailing campus access requirements and social distancing expectations, it has been necessary to modify our typical On-Site Material Pick-Up process. Students have been scheduled alphabetically by grade level and assigned a date and time to come to campus to receive the necessary materials including: schedules, textbooks, handbooks, and Chromebooks.

Additionally, if you are in need of a new ID photo, there will be a photo station available. All Sophomores must return their school issued Chromebook and charger during material pick-up. These devices are being replaced and a new Chromebook and charger will be issued to the student. These new devices will be their Chromebooks for the rest of their time at Grant. You may keep any accessories (earbuds and cases) that were handed out with the original Chromebook as these are yours to keep and use with the new device.

Students will need to provide their own transportation. The following list indicates the pick-up day assigned to each grade and a link to view your assigned pick-up time. Once you have accessed your schedule, you can easily search for your scheduled time by pressing “Ctrl + F” and entering your name within the search box.

August 10 - Seniors

August 11 - Juniors

August 12 - Sophomores

Freshman Orientation 2020

With the strict guidelines from the IDPH and ISBE detailing campus access requirements and social distancing expectations, it has been necessary to modify our typical Freshman Orientation process. Freshman Orientation 2020 will be condensed to reduce student time on campus and to focus on 1) distributing necessary learning materials, and 2) establishing initial relationships with TEAM teachers and Big Dawg Mentors.

Freshmen have been scheduled by last name and TEAM room into a specific date and time. At their scheduled time, students will be met by their Big Dawg Mentors and TEAM teacher to assist them in getting their learning materials (schedules, textbooks, handbooks, and Chromebooks). Additionally, there will be a photo station available to all students who have not had an ID photo taken yet. Following material distribution, students will meet with their TEAM teacher and Big Dawg Mentors to log into Schoology, access student emails, and prepare them for their first day of classes.

All Freshmen that were issued summer school devices must return their school issued Chromebook and charger during material pick-up. These devices are being replaced and a new Chromebook and charger will be issued to the student. These new devices will be their Chromebooks for the rest of their time at Grant. You may keep any accessories (earbuds and cases) that were handed out with the original Chromebook as these are yours to keep and use with the new device.

Orientation will run from 7:45 am - 2:00 pm with Freshmen scheduled in small groups on campus for approximately 1 hour. Students will need to provide their own transportation. The two-day schedule for Freshman Orientation has been linked below. Once you have accessed the orientation schedule, you can easily search for your scheduled time by pressing “Ctrl + F” and entering your name within the search box.

Sophomores and Freshmen will enter Door #9 for an orientation session between 1:00pm and 2:00pm.
