Lester Raff, a retired pathologist and longtime community advocate, is running for a seat on the Village of Riverwoods Board of Trustees in the April 1 election.

Raff’s candidacy is fueled by his dedication to maintain the village’s unique character while addressing the challenges it faces.

"I hope to maintain the wooded, semi-rural nature of much of the community, while also supporting the higher density areas such as Thorngate," Raff told the Lake County Gazette. "I would like to see an improvement in the nature of the commercial enterprises in the Village, and some new mixed-use areas. I enjoy the multi-generational aspect of the residents and want to see that continue, as well as an increase in diversity."

He reflected on his professional and civic background, which he believes equips him with the necessary experience to serve effectively.

"In my personal life, I served on the District 125 Stevenson High School Board of Education for 16 years, including six as President,” he said. “Since moving to Riverwoods I have been involved in numerous civic committees and task forces. These have provided me with a deep understanding of the uniqueness of our community."

"Although I am now retired, in my career as a pathologist I was responsible for creating and managing several laboratories and making daily decisions on diagnostic biopsies," he said.

Raff, along with Andrew C. Eastmond and Laura M. Trevino, is running on the Riverwoods Caucus Party ticket.

He outlined key issues that he intends to focus on if elected, including the Deerfield Road project and maintaining the village’s infrastructure and green spaces.

"Our issues include: Cooperating with Lake County on the Deerfield Road project, while minimizing any downside to our residents,” Raff said. “Maintaining infrastructure. Maintaining and sustaining the woodland nature of much of the community. Carefully considering options for the appropriate use of areas that may become vacant as commercial office properties downsize. Evaluating the water distribution system.”

Improving communication between the Village and its residents is another priority for Raff.

"Continuing the steps already made in improved communication between the Village and the residents is important,” he said. “We are currently determining residents' priorities via a community-wide survey, updating the Village code, and following through on the Sustainability Plan currently being developed.”

Raff also emphasized the need for transparency and collaboration with other local agencies.

"Ensuring communication and transparency from the Board of Trustees, cooperating with local intergovernmental agencies, and advocating for Village residents in statewide matters are essential," he said. "For instance, advocating for a state-wide code establishing guidelines for manufacturing and warehouse sites is one of the ways we can support our residents."

The Village of Riverwoods is governed by a Mayor and a six-member Board of Trustees, with trustees serving unpaid four-year terms and the Mayor overseeing administrative work. Board meetings are held bi-monthly and open to the public.
