Westminster Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeni Gotto announced that three students from the district have been selected for the Adams County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award. This recognition celebrates students who have "overcome personal adversity to create a positive change in their lives. "

The honored students, nominated by their teachers or school counselors, are Ana Karen Mendoza Ontiveros from Hidden Lake Secondary School, Justice Avila from Metropolitan Arts Academy, and Jhoan Chirinos Pereira from Westminster High School.

"This special recognition is called the Adams County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Award and I am thrilled to tell you that three of our Westminster Public Schools students have been selected for the honor," Dr. Gotto said.

The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, with WPS leadership attending to celebrate these students' achievements. Dr. Gotto emphasized that these individuals represent many other children and families who face daily challenges but continue to persevere.

"They have discovered that having faith in themselves and a willingness to work hard can help overcome many of life’s obstacles," she said. "They also understand that education remains the great equalizer in society and the path to success. "

Dr. Gotto also reflected on her recent participation in the Read Across America Program at Mesa Elementary as part of Dr. Seuss’s birthday celebrations.

"It is an incredible feeling to see children’s eyes light up as they listen to stories, understand the joy of learning, and let their imaginations take hold," she remarked.

She concluded her note with a quote from Dr. Seuss: "Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!"

Warm regards,
