Grayslake D127 students, along with peers from nine area schools, participated in the Endeavor Health Science Discovery Day—a hands-on career exploration event designed to connect students with real-world medical experiences and professional mentorship.
The event featured 14 interactive stations where students could engage in activities such as suturing, cardiac monitoring, pharmacology, sports medicine, and sterile operating room procedures. The aim was to provide a deeper understanding of the diverse career paths available in healthcare.
“It’s one thing to learn about careers through a textbook, but today, students had hands-on experiences and direct mentorship that connected them with professionals in Lake County,” said Gina Schuyler, Administrator for Careers & Community Partnerships. “Whether students walked away more excited about a particular field or realizing it’s not for them, that’s a win because career exploration is about finding the right fit. ”
The event is part of an ongoing partnership between D127 and Endeavor Health, College of Lake County (CLC), Tech Campus, University Center, and Lake County Workforce Development. This collaboration aims to provide students with access to internships, career exploration opportunities, and direct industry connections.
“There are so many careers in healthcare that people don’t even know about,” said Samir Desai, Vice President of DEI and People Strategy at Endeavor Health. “The more we get out into schools and show students what’s possible, the more we can help them find their path. ”
For many students, interacting with professionals and trying out different medical skills was a highlight of the day.
“Talking with professionals who have already gone through the education process helped me understand the best path forward in college and career,” said Luis C., a student from Grayslake Central. “Plus, learning how to do stitches at the suturing station was so interactive because I actually got to practice a real- world skill. ”
Michaela G., another student from Grayslake North remarked on her expanded view of healthcare careers: “I always thought of healthcare as just doctors and nurses but today I learned about kinesiology, EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians), occupational therapy—and so much more,” she said.” I can actually see myself in these fields now.”
Grayslake D127 continues its efforts to expand opportunities that connect students with local industries ensuring they graduate equipped with real-world skills along clear pathways towards their careers.Events like Endeavor Health Science Discovery Day exemplify how district brings hands-on high-impact learning experiences closer home.
