The Byron School District is advancing significant repairs on some of its oldest spaces as part of its long-term Capital Improvement Plan. This plan was developed through the Strategic Planning process, with input from Community Focus Groups and the Buildings and Ground Task Force to identify and prioritize essential projects throughout the district. Criteria considered included cost effectiveness, handicap accessibility, safety conditions, and potential for multi-use.

"Some of these spaces haven't been touched in 30 to 40 years so the equipment and materials needed to make repairs is no longer available," said Byron Activities Director Jeff Milburn. "We're proud of the history that has taken place here and we want to ensure that future generations have the same opportunity to achieve excellence--these renovations will help do that. "

One prominent space undergoing renovation is Everett Stine Stadium, home to Byron's football and track & field programs. The stadium was dedicated in honor of Coach Everett Stine on August 25, 2012. Coach Stine served as head coach of varsity football for 37 years (1967-2003), leading his team to IHSA State Playoffs fifteen times and securing Byron's first state championship in 1999. Under his leadership, fifteen players earned all-state status, sixty- six went on to play college football--twelve in NCAA Division I--and two players reached the National Football League.

Renovations at Everett Stine Stadium will include installing new home bleachers with expanded ADA seating on the west side, replacing the six-lane track with an eight-lane track to host IHSA events again, turfing sidelines to protect track surface integrity, consolidating field events near pickleball courts, and implementing safety improvements. A re-dedication ceremony is planned for fall upon completion.

The Byron PE Center will also receive repairs including replacing the indoor track surface with a safer one allowing indoor cleats usage, installing new drop-down batting cages, and rehabbing restrooms and tile. The center serves both school district and park district athletes year-round.

The Byron Aquatic Center's renovations aim to improve air quality and pool environment safety by replacing the pool deck, starter blocks, diving board, timing software, HVAC systems while re-configuring visitor entry for ADA seating accommodation along with updating lighting and sound acoustics.

On Thursday March 20th, the Board approved bond sales financing these projects alongside additional renovations at Byron High School including food service area updates and Student Services Office improvements while intending to keep their tax rate stable despite selling bonds.

Superintendent Buster Barton acknowledged these projects' necessity stating, "These vital spaces which have served as foundation for countless student achievements are undergoing updates to continue fostering excellence. " Future announcements will communicate celebration details once projects conclude by fall.
