Lake County announces temporary Clerk's Office relocation

Lake County announced that the Recording and Tax Extension Divisions of the Clerk's Office will temporarily relocate to the County Administration Building lobby in Waukegan starting April 2. This announcement was made in a press release on March 31.

According to Lake County, the sixth-floor office will be closed due to construction, and walk-in customers should visit the lobby of the County Administration Building instead. Regular operations on the sixth floor are scheduled to resume on April 9. The county notes that inquiries can be directed to Cynthia Pruim Haran, chief deputy of the Lake County Clerk's Office, at 847-377-2062.

The Lake County Clerk is responsible for calculating property tax rates for all taxing districts in the county. The process spans two years, with property tax billing occurring in the second year. The first year involves property assessments, budget approvals, and levy filings by various districts. In the second year, the Clerk calculates tax rates, applies limits, and certifies rates for billing. Tax bills are sent out in May, with payments due in June and September. Delinquent taxes are handled through a tax sale in November or December. Property owners can contest assessments during the first year but not after receiving their tax bill.

The Lake County Clerk's Office, led by Anthony Vega since December 1, 2022, manages the Recording Division responsible for recording, preserving, and providing access to public records. The office aims to maintain accurate records, integrate modern technology while preserving traditional practices, and operate with transparency. Its goals include timely document recording, efficient retrieval methods, record preservation, staff development, and maintaining a balanced budget.

Lake County government operates as a branch of the state managing public safety, health infrastructure zoning and judicial functions. The county board oversees financial decisions and local laws while seven independently elected officials lead key departments.
