This summer, Grayslake D127 is inviting middle school students to channel their inner Jedi at Grayslake Central High School.
From June 9-13, the D127 Light Saber Dream, Design & Create Camp will guide students through the process of designing, customizing, and building their own lightsabers using real-world software and manufacturing tools. Led by Chris Ellingsen, CTE instructor, and supported by two student interns, campers will work with industry-aligned technology to bring their vision to life.
“This is often a student’s first exposure to manufacturing and design,” says Ellingsen. “By the time they leave, they’re not just excited about the lightsaber they built; they’re thinking about what else they can create. ”
Throughout the week, campers will explore how design turns into production, learn current technical skills, and tour a local manufacturing company to see those same tools and techniques in action. The program aims to provide hands- on learning that could inspire future pathways in engineering, technology, and advanced manufacturing.
The camp details are as follows:
- Dates: June 9-13 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Location: Grayslake Central, 400 N. Lake St.
- Ages: 11-13
- Cost: $150
Space is limited for this program designed to inspire innovation among young learners.
