The WPS Board of Education recognized Sheryl McCoy, Administrative Assistant in Human Resources, and Heidi Weekley, Executive Director of Integrated Services, for their exceptional service and dedication to the district's mission of putting students first.

The award, named after a Denver mailman profiled in the bestselling book "The Fred Factor," was created by Mike Lynch, Executive Director of Learning Services, to acknowledge outstanding employees.

Sheryl McCoy | A Steady and Supportive Voice in HR

Nominated by WPS retiree Amy Bennett, Sheryl McCoy was honored for her support and professionalism during a challenging transition into retirement. After a complication with healthcare coverage for Bennett's husband, McCoy investigated the issue, resolved it, and followed up to ensure everything was in order.

"She is delightful to work with," Bennett wrote in her nomination. "Sheryl is always cheerful, responds promptly, and works diligently. She takes pride in her work and truly knows how to get things done. "

McCoy's approachable demeanor and deep knowledge of HR processes have made her an invaluable resource for staff members navigating complex systems.

Heidi Weekley | A "Yoda-Level" Leader

Heidi Weekley was nominated by Tricia Corneau for her remarkable leadership and commitment to students, families, and staff. Known for her calm presence and intuitive mentoring style, Weekley has become a pillar of strength within the district.

"Heidi embodies grace and composure in even the most challenging situations," Corneau said. "She inspires confidence in everyone around her and makes each person feel seen and valued. "

Corneau even created a "Super-Hero" cape for Weekley to try on during the presentation.

Described as a leader who guides through empowerment rather than directives, Weekley is credited with fostering an environment where collaboration, self-discovery, and equity flourish. Her leadership ensures that services across departments remain ethical, inclusive, and centered on the diverse needs of the WPS community.

The FRED Awards continue to highlight individuals like Sheryl McCoy and Heidi Weekley who go above and beyond every day, driven by purpose and compassion.
