Kodi Kelly, Doug Kurkowski, and Stephanie Fick have been named principals at Sherrelwood, Mesa, and Fairview Elementary schools respectively. They are already working with school staff and students to ensure a smooth transition into the coming school year. All three have served as skilled assistant principals in Westminster Public Schools.

Maureen Bangsund was named principal at Westminster High School earlier this month. More information about her is available in an accompanying story.

After an interview process that considered multiple candidates, Superintendent Dr. Jeni Gotto said the new principals were selected due to their success in their current roles as school leaders.

“I am so pleased with this year’s selection process and our choices because they are ready to hit the ground running and are already committed to our community and our Competency Based System,” Gotto told the Board of Education. “We strongly believe in developing our own leaders and principals, not just because of their understanding of CBS but because it reflects our belief in Leadership at all Levels and our commitment to recognizing and rewarding hard work. ”

Kodi Kelly | Incoming Principal | Sherrelwood Elementary

Kelly is currently the Assistant Principal at Colorado Sports Leadership Academy. In her message to the community after her selection, she said: “As an educator and leader, I believe deeply in the brilliance of every student, the power of meaningful relationships, and the importance of creating a school environment where students feel seen, safe, and inspired. I look forward to collaborating with the dedicated staff at Sherrelwood to support our students’ growth—academically, socially, and emotionally. ” Kelly replaces long-time Principal Cindy Davis who announced her retirement last summer.

Doug Kurkowski | Incoming Principal | Mesa Elementary

Kurkowski is currently the Assistant Principal at Sunset Ridge PK-8. In his letter to the community he wrote: “In the weeks ahead, I plan to work closely with Janelle to gain insight into what makes Mesa special and to understand the needs and priorities of the students, staff, and families. My goal is to ensure a smooth transition while continuing the great work happening at Mesa. ” Kurkowski replaces Janelle Stastny who also announced her retirement last year.

Stephanie Fick | Incoming Principal | Fairview PK-8

Fick is currently the Assistant Principal in Fairview PK-8. She wrote in her letter: “Fairview is a special place because of the amazing people who make up this community. I look forward to working alongside all of you as we continue to foster a positive enriching environment where every student can thrive. ” Fick replaces Lisa Cyr who has moved on to become Director of Transportation for WPS.

District leadership will now focus on selecting assistant principals and school deans.
