Grayslake D127’s FIRE PIT Dream, Design & Create Camp offers middle school students a unique opportunity to learn welding this summer. The camp is scheduled for June 16–20 at Grayslake Central High School.

During the camp, participants will engage in both traditional and robotic welding to build a custom-designed fire pit they can take home. Under the guidance of CTE instructor Chris Ellingsen and high school student interns, campers will use software and fabrication tools common in professional manufacturing settings.

“Students are amazed to see how design becomes reality,” says Ellingsen. “They’re not just learning how to weld—they’re discovering an entirely new world of possibility for their future. ”

The program includes instruction on CAD software and allows students to create cut-out themes for their fire pits. Participants will also work hands-on with materials and equipment used by skilled tradespeople and engineers. A tour of a local manufacturing company is included to help students connect their learning to real-world careers.

With expanding opportunities in welding, robotics, and advanced manufacturing, the camp aims to introduce students to in-demand jobs while they create a functional project.
