North Shore School District 112 celebrated a significant step in its sustainability and modernization efforts with the groundbreaking of a geothermal HVAC system at Ravinia Elementary School on Wednesday, April 16. This event marked the first installation in the United States of a Direct Closed Loop (DCL) geothermal system, setting a new standard in energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Ravinia is the first of three district schools scheduled to receive this advanced system, which uses natural convection to move fluid through a closed loop of underground pipes without pumps. This method provides up to ten times more efficiency than traditional HVAC systems while protecting local water sources by not extracting or discharging groundwater. In addition to its environmental benefits, the system will create a more comfortable and consistent learning environment for students and staff while significantly reducing long-term energy costs.

“This is a milestone for the district,” Superintendent Michael Lubelfeld said at the ceremony. “We preach about innovation and sustainability, and today we’re demonstrating another example of how we practice that. This visionary project did not happen by accident. It took a team and a community. ”

Ravinia Elementary School is currently undergoing major renovations, scheduled for completion this spring, with students and staff set to return for the 2025–2026 school year. Sherwood Elementary is also renovating to include the same geothermal technology, and Wayne Thomas Elementary has future renovations planned within the next few years to incorporate the system as well. These installations reflect the district’s continued investment in sustainable infrastructure across multiple campuses.

“Our students deserve facilities that reflect the high standards of their education,” Board of Education President Lisa Hirsh said. “Investing in sustainable infrastructure sends a powerful message: We care deeply about their future both inside and outside the classroom. ”

The district is partnering with Trane Technologies, Gilbane Building Company, and Wight & Company to support the design and implementation of these sustainable systems.
