Granite City High School Library receives $2,000 grant to update biographies section

The Granite City High School Library has been selected as one of 26 school libraries in Illinois to receive a $2,000 grant aimed at updating its book collection. The Feed Your Need Grant, which is awarded annually on a competitive basis across the state, comes from the Association of Illinois School Librarians and the Library Book Selection Service Endowment Fund. The funds are designated for the purchase of books and e-books.

"I'm honored to accept this grant award that will help give our GCHS library biographies section a much needed update," said GCHS Library/Media Center Specialist Jennifer Connolly. "We can't wait to order books about people who kids find interesting!"

The Feed Your Need Grant provides librarians with the opportunity to improve sections of their collections that are outdated or do not meet curricular standards.

Granite City High School is part of the Granite City Community Unit School District 9, which includes several schools in Madison County such as Coolidge Junior High School and Frohardt Elementary School. According to the Illinois State Board of Education, the district employs 320 teachers, with an average salary of $67,898. The teaching staff is 77.1 percent women and 22.9 percent men, and none have more than 10 absences in a school year. The district serves a student body that is 65.3 percent White, 15.9 percent Black, 11.7 percent Hispanic, and 0.6 percent Asian (source). In 2020, the district spent $17,739 per student, with a total expenditure of $106,256,610 (source).
