Mayor Nancy Rotering addressed the conclusion of the Highland Park Shooting trial on Thursday, April 24, 2025. At a joint press conference with Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart at the Lake County Courthouse, Mayor Rotering delivered her remarks.

"Today, a chapter has closed on our community’s journey, but no verdict or sentence can erase the pain or lasting impact of this horrific act," said Mayor Rotering. "As we listened to the powerful voices of those whose lives were forever changed, we were reminded of the profound loss - of loved ones taken too soon, of the sense of safety that was shattered, and of the futures that were forever altered. "

Mayor Rotering expressed gratitude towards Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart and his team for their efforts in pursuing justice. She also acknowledged first responders, law enforcement officers, Community Emergency Response Team members, and medical professionals for their dedication and professionalism throughout this challenging time.

"Thank you to Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart and his team for their partnership and tireless pursuit of justice," she said. "Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to the first responders, law enforcement officers, Community Emergency Response Team and medical professionals who have shown extraordinary dedication and served with compassion and professionalism throughout this painful process. "

While legal proceedings have ended, Mayor Rotering emphasized that the work is not over. She reaffirmed commitment to supporting survivors and families affected by the tragedy.

"While the legal proceedings have concluded, our work continues," Mayor Rotering said. "We will always stand with the survivors, the families, and all who carry the weight of this tragedy. Our support remains steadfast. We will never forget. "

Mayor Rotering called for meaningful change to prevent future tragedies.

"This sentencing does not mark the end of our efforts—it strengthens our resolve to push for meaningful change," she said. "It is another opportunity for a call to action as we continue to plead with our nation’s leaders to take decisive action to prevent future tragedies. No community should have to endure such devastation. "

In closing her remarks, Mayor Rotering highlighted unity in building a safer future.
