Buffalo Grove Police arrested a man near the Chevy Chase Apartments on April 24 after responding to a call regarding an armed robbery, which was later classified as a situation involving a man with a gun. A witness reported being confronted by a man with a shotgun immediately after hearing a gunshot.

According to a news release, Buffalo Grove Police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Johnson Drive at approximately 12:14 a.m. on Thursday, April 24. Police learned that a witness heard a gunshot and was confronted by a man with a shotgun. The suspect ordered entry into the apartment building and left the witness behind. Officers found a spent shotgun shell outside the address.

The news release said that the witness described the suspect to the police. Officers searched the apartment building for the offender and determined that he matched the description of Kevin Smith, who resides in the building. Smith was contacted but fled on foot. Officers apprehended him nearby and took him into custody. Further investigation revealed that Smith had several weapons and ammunition in his possession, including a shotgun that police recovered. No injuries or damages were reported.

According to the release, the Lake County State's Attorney's office reviewed the facts of the case and approved charges against Kevin Smith, 61, of Buffalo Grove, for aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and reckless discharge of a firearm. He was taken to his first court appearance on April 24, where police requested to retain the recovered firearms and ammunition for safekeeping. Smith was held for a pre-trial detention hearing on April 25 at the Lake County Courthouse. Individuals charged with crimes are considered innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
