On Monday, April 28, 2025, the City of Highland Park Police Department responded to a report of a threatening text message and a suspicious fire set to a garbage can in the 200 block of Roger Williams Ave. The text message included an attempt to extort $80,000 from the homeowner by threatening to kidnap and harm a family member.
Multiple threatening text messages were subsequently sent to the homeowner over the next few days. Highland Park Police utilized investigative techniques to determine the source of these messages. Investigators identified Eduardo Aragon, 25, of 1640 Second St., Highland Park, as the offender. Mr. Aragon was taken into custody on Saturday, May 3, 2025.
The facts of the investigation were reviewed with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. Mr. Aragon was charged with:
- Arson 720 5/20-1(a)(a)(1) Class 2 Felony
- Intimidation 720 ILCS 5/12-6(a)(1) Class 3 Felony (five counts)
- Intimidation 720 ILCS 5/12-6(a)(2) Class 3 Felony
- Harassment Through Electronic Communication 720 ILCS 5/26.5-3(a)(5)
Mr. Aragon had his First Appearance hearing on Sunday, May 4, 2025. At that hearing, the Lake County State's Attorney's Office filed a petition to detain. The State's petition was granted on Monday, May 5, 2025. Mr. Aragon remained in custody between these dates and will remain in custody until his trial date without bail.
