Martin McLaughlin, a State Representative from Illinois, has criticized Governor J.B. Pritzker's sanctuary policies, claiming they prioritize the interests of illegal immigrants over those of state residents. He said that these policies harm families and taxpayers in Illinois. The statement was made on the social media platform X.
"This Governor should be ashamed," said Martin J. Mclaughlin. "He's turned Illinois into a Sanctuary State for illegal immigrants — choosing them over our own citizens and sticking taxpayers with the bill. His policies are harming too many families. This isn't compassion. It's betrayal."
Governor Pritzker has been under increased scrutiny for the state's sanctuary policies, particularly following his congressional testimony in June 2025. During this testimony, he defended Illinois' approach despite opponents' claims that these policies strain resources and endanger public safety, as reported by Axios.
According to Illinois Policy, state taxpayers spent approximately $2.84 billion on services for undocumented immigrants from July 2022 to mid-2024. This expenditure included $820 million for migrant support services and over $2 billion for healthcare programs before recent budget cuts were implemented.
Academic studies and national news sources such as AP News indicate that while Illinois' sanctuary policies result in higher spending per capita on migrant services compared to most non-sanctuary states, there is no correlation between these policies and higher crime rates or diminished public safety.
McLaughlin is a Republican State Representative for Illinois’ 52nd District. First elected in 2021, he is a former Barrington Hills Village President and business owner. He is also active on revenue and judiciary committees, according to Ballotpedia.
