Infected tires picked up from landfills was just one of several discussions stemming from agenda items for the Waukegan Planning & Zoning Commission at its Oct. 8, 2015, meeting.
A proposed donut shop, hotels and a cellular tower were also considered as the commission convened at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall to deal with a variety of environmental pros and cons.
Roll call and the approval of Sept. 10, 2015, meeting minutes were first items of order, with a number of amendments made for minor errors.
In old business, the commission debated the wisdom of permitting a tire recycling facility operation on Sunset Avenue, comparing safety features and risks. “We are excited to bring this clean green and safe operation to Waukegan,” petitioner Dave Brittsan said.
Both he and co-petitioner Jim Cioni were met with questioning and mild objections to potential noise, traffic and toxicity. At least two individuals pleaded for their neighborhood to remain beautiful in the public hearing portion, and the topic was tabled pending further investigation.
A proposed two-story Dunkin Donuts franchise was presented by Jim Duerr. After commissioners queried about pedestrian traffic, parking and accessibility, they unanimously recommended approval.
The commission also approved a drive-through facility for North Shore Management Group, re-subdivision plats for one hotel by SDC Waukegan Venture LLC and hotel Hampton Inn & Suites.
Additionally, the commission approved a zoning calendar and conditional use permit for a 130-foot monopole cellular tower following lively discussion. No other permit reviews were scheduled, and the meeting adjourned at 10:50 p.m.
