ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 61: Mason Cautions Against Impaired Driving This Holiday Season

61

Illinois State House District 61 issued the following announcement on Dec. 30

With holiday celebrations underway, state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, is encouraging residents to learn about the dangers associated with drunk and drugged driving and how they can do their part to reduce collisions.

“We all play an important role in keeping our shared roads safe year-round but especially during the holidays,” Mason said. “With holiday parties and days off from work, more drunk-driving crashes occur this time of year, and I want to remind people to enjoy the season safely.”

December has been proclaimed National Impaired Driving Prevention Month to raise awareness on the dangers of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. According to the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, drunk drivers play a role in 40% of fatal crashes occurring around Christmas and New Year’s, claiming 285 lives during this period last year. Mason is encouraging residents to drive sober, and to call 911 to report a motorist suspected to be impaired.

“If you’re drinking, make sure you have a plan in place to get home safely, such as a ride-sharing app or a designated driver,” Mason said. “Doing so can prevent needless injuries and deaths this winter.”
