The new legislative maps drawn and passed by Illinois Democrats in the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker have prompted two Republican lawmakers to pursue legal action in federal court.
Illinois Senate Republican Leader Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods) and Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) are suing Illinois House Speaker Emanuel Chris Welch (D-Westchester), Illinois Senate President Don Harmon (D-Chicago), the offices of the Speaker of the House and the Senate President, and the Illinois State Board of Elections and its members, Sen. Craig Wilcox’s (R-McHenry) website reported on June 10.
Wilcox took to Facebook to blast the maps.
"Democrats chose to use population estimates rather than wait for U.S. Census data for the new maps so the majority party could solidify their control for the next decade," the lawmaker wrote. "In using estimates, they marginalized minority voices and representation. Now they'll have to answer for their actions in federal court."
Wilcox's site additionally reported that the lawsuit seeks to have the maps declared unconstitutional.
McConchie and Durkin, in turn, promised to adopt a transparent, bipartisan and independent process for drawing and approving a legislative map.
