Sunrise Beach in Lake Bluff earned the 54th spot in Family Destinations Guide' survey of "America’s Favorite 100 Secret Beaches" | Lake Bluff Park District / Website
The Family Destinations Guide has named Sunrise Beach in Lake Bluff as the 54th best “secret beach” in the United States.
The group surveyed over 3,000 families to compile the list. Coming in on either side of Sunrise Beach were Mansion Beach in Rhode Island at 53 and Bandon State Natural Area in Oregon at no. 55. The best hidden beach was Awahua Beach in Hawaii. No. 100 on the list was Broadkill Beach in Delaware.
“The beach is on Lake Michigan and is described as having pristine white sand, crystal clear water and stunning views of the lake,” WGN-TV reported on the designation. “For residents of Lake Bluff, the beach is free. Non-residents, however, must purchase daily passes for access.”
Sunrise Beach is operated by the Lake Bluff Park District. Swimming is prohibited when there are no lifeguards on duty. The lifeguard-supervised swimming hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The beach closes at 10 p.m.
The use of the beach "is free to Park District Residents” according to Lake Bluff Park District. Residents should only have to show their passes to the staff present at the beach entrance. This year, Lake Bluff Park District announced that "all residents will receive a Beach Membership pass, a state-issued photo ID or driver’s license is required for beach entry." Accordingly, "Staff will be on duty to collect fees, check beach passes and check dog beach tags until 10:00 PM." Beachgoers are advised to hold on to their receipt for possible spot checks during the day.
South Sunrise Beach will be closed for the 2023 summer season for construction on its basin built by the North Shore Water Reclamation District, Patch reported. The Lake Bluff Park District will be repaving the parking lot, resurfacing the road, and adding bathrooms.
"Currently, the Beach Access road will be closed Monday through Friday from 6:45 am-7:00 pm and Saturday from 6:45 am-6:00 pm," the latest announcement from Lake Bluff Park District reads. "Parking will not be permitted during the hours of 3 AM to 3 PM (Monday to Friday) along eastbound East Center Avenue from Evanston Avenue to Sunrise Avenue for the period Monday, April 3, 2023 until Friday, May 26, 2023."
