FOIA Request Sent to City Of Lake Forest Finance Department Regarding City Sales Tax Records on October 31, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the City Of Lake Forest Finance Department on October 31, 2024. The request was made by us at the Lake County Gazette, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

The request specifically sought records pertaining to city sales tax paid by businesses from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024. We asked for a list of businesses that had paid sales tax during this period, with specific details including the business name, business type, and the amount of sales tax each business had paid.

In addition to these details about individual businesses, we also requested information about the total amount of sales tax that the city collected during this same time frame.

As journalists committed to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
