The Village of Mokena is set to commence its holiday season festivities with the Parade of Lights on Saturday, November 23. The event will be followed by the Village Tree Lighting ceremony.
According to the Mokena Chamber of Commerce's website, the annual Parade of Lights will begin at 5 p.m., with participants lining up at 4:30 p.m. at Mokena Elementary School, located at 11244 Willowcrest Lane. The parade route will proceed south on Wolf Road, east on Front Street, and then north on Division.
The chamber states that lighted and decorated floats, vehicles, or costumed characters are encouraged to register for participation in the parade. It is open to businesses, organizations, and families. Following the parade, the Village Tree Lighting will take place at the corner of Front and Mokena Streets. Due to safety concerns related to darkness, all candy or giveaways must be handed out directly rather than thrown. Additionally, no Santas will be permitted in the parade as Santa has been secured for the grand finale.
The Mokena Miracles website indicates it will host Santa’s Secret Workshop on Saturday, December 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring a craft and vendor fair at Mokena Elementary School. Over 30 crafters and vendors are expected to participate, offering families an opportunity for photos with Santa. Admission is free.
Furthermore, the Mokena Chamber of Commerce is organizing its Christmas Tree Walk competition on Saturday, December 2, from 5-7 p.m., along Front Street and Wolf Road. A new addition this year is the Kona Ice Hot Cocoa Truck. Attendees can stroll through beautifully decorated Christmas trees presented by chamber businesses and organizations. Votes for favorite trees can be cast by placing non-perishable food items, unwrapped toys, or pet food/supplies in bins under each tree; these items will be donated to local charities including Frankfort Township Food Pantry and NAWS Animal Shelter.
A Free Haven Forest School news release announces it will host a Live Nativity Hike on December 7 from 3:30-6:30 p.m., located at 12957 W Regan Road in Mokena. Visitors can learn about the Christmas story through live student actors while hiking through a decorated forest setting. Additional activities include crafting gifts at a craft table and purchasing refreshments such as fresh local honey and hot chocolate from a concession stand.
