Lake County Sheriff's K9 bites a suspect who kicked him

A Lake County Sheriff's K9 bit a suspect who kicked him in the head as deputies attempted to speak with the man. Deputies responded to the 38800 block of North Gilbert Avenue in Beach Park at approximately 3:30 p.m. on January 29.

"I am grateful that Canine Danno was uninjured after being kicked in the head by an out-of-control offender. Fortunately, none of our deputies were injured either. This incident is yet another reminder of the dangers and risks our deputies—and law enforcement officers across the country—face every day," Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, according to a Lake County Sheriff's Office news release.

According to the news release, deputies responded to the Beach Park address for a report of a man attempting to break into a victim's garage. As they responded, a second person called 911 to report she was being followed by a man who matched the same description. The caller told Lake County Sheriff's Telecommunicators that the man insinuated he had a gun. Deputies arrived and found the man, identified as Jose I. Pineda-Carillo, 34, of Waukegan. The suspect was uncooperative and belligerent when deputies attempted to talk with him. Efforts to de-escalate the situation failed.

The release said that K9 Danno arrived to assist. As deputies moved closer, Pineda-Carillo kicked Danno in the head and in response, Danno bit the suspect in the foot. Deputies took Pineda-Carillo into custody. A search determined he was not armed. Danno was not injured.

According to the release, Pineda-Carillo was charged with striking a police canine, resisting arrest, attempting criminal trespass to property, and disorderly conduct. He appeared in First Appearance Court and was ordered to have electronic monitoring. A February 25 court date was set. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
