Julia C., a fourth grader from Field Elementary School, is set to perform with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra on April 30. She earned this opportunity by winning the 2025 Bach Double Violin Competition. At just 10 years old, Julia will join professional musicians and seven other students for a special performance in Milwaukee.
Julia began playing the violin at age six after being inspired by a friend's graduation recital. "I really enjoy sharing my music with others, and the music I can make with the violin," she said. Despite her young age, Julia has achieved notable accomplishments in music. She received an honorable mention at the O’Malley Foundation National Concerto Competition in 2024 and holds leadership roles as concertmaster and assistant concertmaster in several school orchestras.
Lauren Wargaski, orchestra director for the London strand of schools, praised Julia's dedication to both her public school program and outside youth orchestra programs. "What’s so extraordinary about Julia is that not many students who are involved in outside youth orchestra programs also choose to still participate in their public school program," Wargaski noted.
Julia was introduced to the Bach Double Violin Competition by her private violin teacher, Gretchen Grube. Although she did not win last year, she persevered and was named one of four winners for first violins this year. "I was really happy, and my family and I had this big celebration," Julia shared.
The piece she performed to win the competition, "Bach’s Double Violin Concerto in D Minor – First Movement," will be played with the MSO. Julia has been practicing diligently and looks forward to performing with a professional orchestra. "I just hope she really enjoys the process," Wargaski added.
Julia aims to continue developing her skills as a violinist and hopes to pursue a career as a professional musician.
