The Cook Park Library in Libertyville is anticipated to reopen by the end of May, with significant renovations completed as part of the Children's Renewal Project. An update on the project's progress was released, highlighting key developments in April and announcing an upcoming name change for the space.

Notable milestones this month include the installation of a brand-new Information Desk, new lighting fixtures, and additional cabinets and shelves.

Information Desk

The removal of the DVD wall that separated the children's computer area from the Check Out Desk has opened up the space significantly. In its place, a larger entrance now hosts a vibrant new Information Desk.

"How cool is this? The desktop of our new Information Desk is made of recycled materials! Not only is it functional and beautiful, it's also helping the environment," said Rob, Children's Librarian.

Lighting

The design inspiration for Cook Park Library came from Aspen Drive Library's Children's expansion in 2019. To create a cohesive look, organic-shaped lighting fixtures have been installed above the new Information Desk.

In addition, large circular ceiling lights have been added to the Middle School Zone to provide a warm glow suitable for reading and homework.

"I'm excited to have a dedicated space for middle schoolers to hang out, attend programs, and enjoy everything the Library has to offer! This new space will only enhance what we already have," said Kevin, Middle School Librarian.

Cabinets, Shelves, and Furniture

Three large storage cabinets have replaced the old Information Desk to house items like Nintendo Switches for in-library play, extra toys, craft supplies, and more. While bookshelves are still being installed, they are expected soon.

"I can't wait for the beautiful new colors on everything from the furniture to the walls and floors! It brings so much life, energy, and fun to the children'' s area," said Amy, Student Services Coordinator.

Introducing: Youth Services

Both Library locations will see Children's Services renamed to Youth Services to better reflect their commitment to serving a wider age range from babies through 8th graders. This change applies both at Cook Park Library in Libertyville and Aspen Drive Library in Vernon Hills.
