A powerful story of music, resilience, and hope reached a wider audience on May 1, 2025, when WGN News aired a feature on Lake Forest College’s musical premiere inspired by 11-year-old cancer survivor Kamila.

The piece, performed by the College’s Band, Orchestra, and Choir, was the culmination of collaboration between Sing Me a Story, Make-A-Wish Illinois, and the College to bring Kamila’s cancer journey to life through music. The WGN segment captured behind-the-scenes rehearsals, interviews with students and faculty, and moments from the April 25 performance at the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest.

“I’m so touched by this phenomenal project and so proud to have been a small part of it,” said Associate Professor of Music Scott Edgar. He gifted his conductor’s baton to Kamila after the concert.

This collaboration involved bands under Edgar's direction, the orchestra under Associate Professor of Music Nick Wallin's guidance, and choirs led by Associate Professor of Music Anne Barry. This performance marked the world premiere of "Kamila’s Story" by Benjamin Martin, a Chicago composer.

The national exposure highlights Lake Forest College’s commitment to community partnerships, student creativity, and the transformative power of the arts.
