Construction is set to begin this summer on the Whispering Oaks Sidewalk Connection Project, aiming to improve pedestrian safety and walkability in the Whispering Oaks neighborhood. Funded partly by a federal Safe Routes to School grant through the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the project is designed to help students, especially those attending Cherokee Elementary School, walk and bike safely to and from school.
The project will add ADA ramps and crosswalks to six intersections that currently lack sidewalk crossings. Additionally, a separate contractor will complete additional sidewalk spot repairs in the area. Construction is expected to begin in June after school recesses, with IDOT-certified construction assistance.
These infrastructure improvements reflect the city’s ongoing commitment to student safety and neighborhood connectivity. Residents are encouraged to stay alert during construction and look forward to a safer, more walkable community just in time for the new school year.
