Coal City High School’s tennis team secured a narrow 4-3 win over Providence Catholic on Monday, September 15. The match featured strong performances from Coal City’s singles players and dramatic finishes in doubles play.
Kyla Kohler led the way in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Kayla Stalter added another point with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Coach Leman said the singles players “did a fantastic job of controlling the tempo of the points and moved the ball around well.”
In doubles action, Camryn Planeta and Kyla Stark won at No. 1 doubles after splitting sets and prevailing in a close supertiebreaker, 10-8. Aubrey Jensen and Vanna Liebermann also came back from losing their first set to win their supertiebreaker at No. 4 doubles, finishing 10-6. “Talk about coming up big when it counts,” Coach Leman said.
Coach Leman added: “This hard-fought win shows the incredible grit and determination of the Coal City team, bringing their season record to 8-2 as they look to take on Yorkville at home on Wednesday. What a day for tennis.”
