The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has announced the identification and charging of a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old in Ingleside. The investigation was aided by the Sheriff’s Explosive Detection K9, which helped locate the firearm involved.

According to Lake County Sheriff’s detectives, they identified the vehicle used in a drive-by shooting in Ingleside and traced it to Yurem Mejia-Gomez, 18, of Round Lake Beach. Mejia-Gomez was determined to be the shooter. Investigators, assisted by explosive detection canine Zack, recovered the firearm used in the incident along with matching ammunition after locating it in a vehicle parked outside a residence in Round Lake Beach. The Lake County state’s attorney’s office approved charges against Mejia-Gomez, including two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The shooting took place on October 10 at a birthday party on North Wilson Road, where a 19-year-old man was shot in the driveway and later pronounced dead. The preliminary investigation suggested that an argument at the party escalated, leading to shots being fired from a vehicle before fleeing.

Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said: "Our patrol deputies, detectives, and explosive detection canine team worked tirelessly to identify and apprehend the person responsible for this senseless act of violence." Idleburg emphasized their commitment to ensuring accountability swiftly.
