PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

COMMUNICATION FROM STAFF, GUESTS, AND DISTRICT RESIDENTS

Citizen Kathy Champine posed questions regarding what the potential utility efficiencies would be if the District housed the pool in a new location, what was the projected enrollment, how many students would benefit from the pool, and how the District would measure its return on investment. Citizen Doug Ower requested that the Board research the benefits of using solar energy, as there are tax incentives available, its good return on investment, and would be a good example to others. Parent Steve Garris stated he was in full support of the Board’s efforts to address replacing the current pool as it provides significant opportunities for students, improves the District’s image, and has been a big part of Zion for many years.

OLD BUSINESS

Approval and Awarding of Natatorium Project Bids

The Business, Bid, and Finance Committee shared with the full Board that it has deliberated at length regarding the bids for the natatorium renovation that came in very high. Board members discussed whether the Board should invest in a renovation project of this aged facility or reject all bids in order to explore the possibility of redirecting the natatorium renovation funds to building a new natatorium adjacent to the field house and theater. Board members discussed that although a new facility would be more expensive, it would remedy several concerns and limitations with the current aged site. The existing space would then be reconfigured for future yet to be determined academic and/or athletic programming. A motion was made by Member White, seconded by Secretary Roberts to reject all bids received on October 15, 2019 for the Natatorium Remodeling Project, and authorize the Administration to pursue plans and bids for construction of a new addition, and to research costs of alternative use options for the old pool space. Motion was approved by a roll call vote of members voting 7-0. (Exhibit “A”, Natatorium Remodeling Bid Awards – Trades,” is included and made a part of these minutes.)
