A scam targeting unsuspecting Lake County residents has caught the attention of local authorities. The Lake County Sheriff's Office and the 19th Judicial Circuit Court of Illinois have issued a warning to residents about individuals attempting to deceive them by impersonating government officials.

“This scam involves con artists calling Lake County residents, introducing themselves as a member of the government (either 19th Judicial Circuit or Lake County Sheriff’s Office),” Lake County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook.

“The scammer then informs the victim a Lake County Judge issued an arrest warrant for missing jury duty. The caller is then instructed to transfer money, usually in the form of a gift card or ‘voucher’ in order to avoid arrest.”

“Neither the Sheriff’s Office nor 19th Judicial Circuit call residents and request money. Lake County Government will not ask for or accept payment in the form of gift cards or ‘Green Dot’ cards.”

Residents are urged to exercise caution as scammers often operate from different states or countries.

To protect yourself, hang up and block the caller's number if using a cellphone, consider filing a report with local law enforcement, and verify the known telephone number of the government office before returning a call.

Remember not to disclose personal information, departure details, document the caller's number, and promptly report any suspicious incidents to local law enforcement.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office also noted the incident on Twitter.

“Scammers targeting Lake County residents pretending to be local government officials,” the sheriff’s office said.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office note in its mission statement its dedication to protecting and serving the community by maintaining order, upholding laws and safeguarding the rights of all individuals.

Their core values encompass integrity, respect, and professionalism, guiding their commitment to honest and ethical behavior, treating everyone with dignity and fairness, and continually improving their skills and practices.
