Lake County and Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) officials signed an intergovernmental support agreement at the county's Libertyville campus on July 23. Lake County will provide sand, gravel, and soil removal for NSGL.

"Lake County has had tremendous success improving efficiency and achieving cost savings by purchasing goods and services with other units of government," said Sandy Hart, Lake County Board Chair, according to a county news release. "The Naval Station has always been a great partner and we are proud to be the home of the Navy's largest training installation and the estimated 100,000 active, reserve, and retired service members and their families who live in Lake County."

According to the Lake County news release, Lake County's existing contract for the purchase of removal services will allow NSGL to team up with the county for joint purchasing. NSGL will also receive assistance with material procurement from the county.

Capt. Steve Yargosz, commanding officer for NGSL, said the agreement strengthens the relationship between Lake County and NGSL. "The county can enhance efficiencies, create new community revenue streams and keep jobs and dollars local," Yargosz said.

NSGL opened in 1911 and is the Navy's only boot camp. The installation located on more than 1,600 acres in Great Lakes includes 1,153 buildings, with 39 on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Lake County Board approved the agreement with NGSL at its July meeting. The agreement can be viewed online at https://lakecounty.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=6728586&GUID=E15290ED-C781-45EA-91C2-691E0165DB0E.
