Waukegan Symphony Orchestra to host concert celebrating black artistry

The Waukegan Symphony Orchestra is set to present a concert titled "Celebrating Black Artistry" on Sunday, February 23, 2025. The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Orlin Trapp Auditorium, located at Waukegan High School’s Brookside Campus. The concert will feature Julius Adams, a special guest soloist from The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle and former Section Violist with the Kansas City Symphony.

The orchestra will perform several pieces including William Grant Still’s "Poem for Orchestra," Georg Philipp Telemann’s "Viola Concerto in G Major," and Antonín Dvořák’s "Symphony No. 9 From the New World."

Founded in 1974, the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024. Under the direction of Music Director Alexander Platt, it offers performance opportunities for over 50 musicians of various ages and experience levels. Concerts often feature guest soloists from across the country.

Tickets are required for attendance. Options include free admission for students and children under 18, while adults can purchase tickets for $20. The concert is supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. More information and ticket details can be found at waukeganparks.org/wsocc.

The Waukegan Park District, established on December 26, 1916, manages over 742 acres of land across 53 properties and offers a wide range of programs and services year-round for all age groups.
