The Lake County Sheriff's Office has announced a collaborative effort with Lake County Facilities to upgrade the jail's designated safety cell area for individuals at risk of self-harm. The initiative aims to enhance safety measures within the facility.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the project involves rebuilding the jail's specialized safety cells, which feature rubberized walls designed to prevent self-harm but have deteriorated over time. The renovation will employ durable new materials and is set to commence tomorrow, with completion anticipated by late June or early July. While construction may lead to occasional odors, measures such as plywood barriers, plastic sheeting, and negative air machines venting outside are being implemented to minimize any impact. This undertaking is part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and modernize the facility.
The Facilities Division is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of building systems, structures, and housekeeping services for all Lake County government buildings in the county seat. Additionally, responsibilities encompass internal services like mail and parcel delivery, furniture moves, office setup and modifications, cleaning of public areas, fire safety, and emergency response. Those wishing to use County spaces must request a permit through the Facilities and Construction Services Department located at 18 N County Street, Room 105 in Waukegan, IL.

The office continues its modernization efforts to accommodate Lake County’s growing population.
