St. Patrick’s Day is approaching, bringing parades, parties, and festive celebrations. To remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving and to help keep streets safe, the Round Lake Police Department is collaborating with the Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Transportation for an enhanced traffic safety campaign from March 7 to March 18.

“We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly,” said a spokesperson for the Round Lake Police Department. “Please plan ahead for a sober ride home before you leave the house — your safety and the safety of others depends on it. ”

The campaign will focus on identifying alcohol- and cannabis-impaired drivers and increasing seat belt enforcement, particularly at night when usage rates are lowest. Speeding, distracted driving, and all traffic laws will also be strictly enforced.

Residents are encouraged to prioritize safety whether attending a party, hosting friends, or visiting a bar. When departing any venue, ensure that your designated driver is sober. The authorities also caution that walking impaired can be dangerous; therefore, it’s advisable to have a sober friend accompany you home. Designated drivers are urged to stay alert for impaired pedestrians who may not obey street signs.

Other important tips include:

- It is never okay to drive impaired regardless of being drunk or high.

- If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement.

- If a friend intends to drive while impaired, take their keys away and arrange alternative transportation.

The St. Patrick’s Day enforcement campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by IDOT.
