Lake County has announced the development of an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Comprehensive Transition Plan and is conducting a Public Access Survey to identify priority areas for accessibility improvements. The announcement was made in a press release on April 4, 2025.

According to Lake County, the ADA Comprehensive Transition Plan aims to enhance accessibility across public spaces, programs, and services. The county is gathering input through a survey and interactive map to identify areas for improvement. Feedback will be used to prioritize accessibility concerns, with the plan expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The Public Access Survey focuses on Lake County-owned public properties, programs, services, and amenities. According to the press release, the interactive map allows users to provide feedback on pedestrian accessibility, safety, and connectivity, with particular attention given to County highways and County-owned buildings. Additional comments on other areas of concern are also welcomed.

The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in various areas including employment, government services, public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications. It also extends its protection to Congress. To be protected by the ADA, a person must either have a disability or have a connection to someone with a disability. The ADA defines disability as a physical or mental impairment that significantly limits one or more major life activities, having a history of such an impairment, or being perceived as having such an impairment according to the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.

The Lake County Board consists of 19 elected members representing different districts and is responsible for approving the county budget, financial matters, and ordinances affecting government departments. Meetings are held in person at the County Administrative Tower in Waukegan or remotely via Zoom. Schedules and agendas are available online. The board convenes monthly for regular sessions along with additional committee meetings which can all be viewed live on LCTV according to Lake County.
