The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a Waukegan drug dealer following a joint investigation conducted by its Special Investigations Group (SIG), in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Chicago Field Division and the Waukegan Police Department.

According to a press release, SIG, which is funded through the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program, worked alongside these agencies to investigate Michael Lewis, 41, of Waukegan. The investigation was initiated after reports surfaced that Lewis was involved in cocaine distribution within Lake County. During their operation, detectives reportedly obtained over 30 grams of cocaine.

On July 9, 2025, SIG organized a controlled drug purchase in Waukegan. As officers moved to arrest Lewis, he attempted to flee but was apprehended shortly thereafter. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office has approved multiple felony charges against him. These include unlawful cocaine distribution near a school and other related distribution and possession charges. Lewis is currently detained at the Lake County Jail as prosecutors intend to file for his detention until trial.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office emphasizes its commitment to maintaining order and protecting community rights through education, communication, partnerships, and enforcement. Its core values are integrity, respect, and professionalism. The office is accredited for adhering to recognized law enforcement standards.

Founded in 1839 with subsequent expansions including an 1895 jail and courthouse addition and the construction of the Robert H. Babcox Justice Center in 1986—named after Sheriff Babcox—the office continues to modernize its operations to meet the needs of Lake County's growing population.
