Lake County has announced that property owners in unincorporated areas may qualify for flood insurance premium discounts averaging $273 annually.

According to Lake County, there are more than 548 flood insurance policies in these unincorporated areas. Residents who meet specific criteria may receive up to 20% discounts on premiums through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS) program. This could result in potential total annual savings of $149,604 across the county. Property owners are advised to contact their flood insurance agents to learn about individual savings. Since joining the CRS program in 2008, Lake County has maintained favorable ratings by submitting an Annual Evaluation Report. This report details flood protection efforts, including issuing permits for elevating buildings and utilities and adding flow-through foundations, all required by the Lake County Unified Development Ordinance to reduce future flood damage.

The Lake County Stormwater Management Commission’s (SMC) Watershed Management Board administers a cost-share grant program prioritizing flood damage prevention and mitigation projects. The county collaborates with residents and agencies such as Township Highway Commissioners and the Stormwater Management Commission to address drainage complaints affecting private properties, ensuring ongoing coordination to manage stormwater and reduce flood risks.

The 2024 Annual Evaluation Report for unincorporated Lake County reviews flood prevention efforts and infrastructure projects under the 2022 Hazard Mitigation Plan. It highlights public outreach, structure elevation permits, and grant-funded projects like stormwater upgrades in Wildwood and Talbot Avenue. The county maintains a Class 6 rating in the National Flood Insurance Program, offering residents flood insurance discounts. Sewer system maintenance and invasive species control were also completed. The report outlines ongoing plans for flood damage reduction, sewer monitoring, and infrastructure improvements to protect residents and reduce flood risks.

The Lake County SMC was established in 1990 by state law to coordinate stormwater efforts across more than 80 local jurisdictions. Its mission focuses on improving water quality, reducing flood damage, and restoring natural drainage systems throughout the county. The commission manages floodplains and watersheds by enforcing countywide floodplain and stormwater standards, supporting flood hazard mitigation projects, implementing watershed plans, and using best management practices. It also works to protect and restore natural resources through partnerships and various funding sources.
